What type of play was shakespeares first play?

Shakespeare was in on a number of premieres. We presume that he acted in the first performance of most of his own plays. We also know that he acted in early performances of Jonson's Every Man in his Humour and Sejanus, and these may have been premieres. Being a full-time actor in a time when new plays were being written and performed pretty much daily meant that many plays got their first performance with Shakespeare in the cast.

Since we don't really know which one was Shakespeare's first play, we don't know what type it was. If it was Henry VI it was a history. If it was Titus Andronicus, it was a tragedy, a revenge play. If it was the Two Gentlemen of Verona or The Comedy of Errors, it was a comedy.

Scholars are much divided among a number of Shakespeare's early plays, including Titus Andronicus, The Comedy of Errors, Love's Labour's Lost, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, and the three parts of Henry VI. The Henry VI plays are the first ones referred to (in 1591), but that doesn't mean he wrote them first.

We do not know for sure. We know that sometime between 1585 and 1592 (posssibly 1590) he went to London and established himself as an actor and a playwright. We know that in 1592 playwright Robrt Greene mocked him as a "Shake-scene" and paraphrased a quote from Shakespeare's Henry VI, calling him "a poet's heart wrapped in a player's hide," lampooning Shakespeare's line in the play, "a tiger's heart wrapped in a woman's hide." There is speculation and surmise, but, in truth, very few facts. Things become clearer after Shakespeare helps to form the Lord Chamberlain's Men in 1594, and even more clear after they company moved into the Globe in 1599.
