Secular ideologies
The movement of Humanism was set in motion during the Renaissance in Europe through a renewed interest in classical Greek and Roman literature, art, and philosophy. Scholars and thinkers of the time emphasized the importance of human potential, reason, and individualism, marking a shift away from the dominant religious and feudal ideologies of the Middle Ages.
The basis for the US philosophy during the Cold War was containment. This policy aimed to prevent the spread of communism by containing its influence, primarily through military, economic, and diplomatic means. The US believed in stopping the expansion of the Soviet Union and communist ideologies to protect its interests and promote democracy worldwide.
Italian humanism focused on the revival of classical texts and the study of human potential and achievement, while Christian humanism integrated Christian values and beliefs into humanist ideas, emphasizing the role of religion in promoting human dignity and social reform.
The symbol of humanism is called the "Happy Human". It is designed to look like an H for humanism. It also resembles a celebrating/cheering man, which represents the aim of making human life as enjoyable as possible, a focus on human rights and concerns, and a celebration of human kind.
Non-examples of humanism could include ideologies that prioritize strict adherence to religious doctrines over human-centered values, or belief systems that glorify the power of non-human entities such as deities or supernatural forces instead of focusing on human potential and well-being. Philosophies that advocate for the exploitation or subjugation of individuals in favor of a larger collective or non-human goal would also not align with humanist principles.

Two ideologies that were most directly opposite of each other were capitalism and communism. Capitalism is an economic system based on private ownership and free markets, while communism is a social and economic system where all property is collectively owned and individuals work for the common good. These ideologies differ in fundamental aspects, such as the role of the state, private property, and the distribution of wealth.
Both ideologies were used to support totalitarian regimes.
