This issue is very controversial until now. According to the book Ive read, he retracted. He received a catholic sacraments before his execution. That time they say that Rizal was excommunicated in church, so it is impossible for him to take those sacrament if he didn't retracted his writings. Even if they say that their is no documents about their marriage, still he confessed in church for the last minute of his life.

There are many answer to this issue, until now there is no concrete evidence about it. Only one thing is sure he passed all requirements to be a hero in the Philippines. There is no perfect person on earth.

Did rizal retracted or not?

No. Jose Rizal did not retract because he never went against Christian/Catholic doctrines at all. All his works focused on abuses of both the Spanish civilian authorities in the Philippines as well as the religious friars ... his attacks focused on people and not doctrines.

Did Rizal retract his admonition to the Catholic church?

Yes, Jose Rizal retracted his "Adios, Patria Adorada" poem due to pressure from the Catholic church. He did this to secure a Catholic burial and protect his family from further persecution.

What is the proof that Rizal did not retract?

-The retraction document is flawed. The first sentence says "I declare myself a catholic and in this Religion in which I was born and educated I wish to live and die". Rizal only had seven hours to live at that time the retraction was made and it was night time, the friars suggested that he had slept that time. The words to live and die is wrong.-The second sentence says that he is retracting to the Church. Rizal would never retract to the Church, because the Church was never his enemy, his enemies were the friars alone.-The place where Rizal was buried was where enemies of the Church was buried. There were two cemeteries, one for Christians and one for the sinners. If Rizal retracted, why was he not buried in the cemetery for Christians.-Trining, his sister, said that he did not retract.-The document was found 30 years after Rizal's death.

What are the controversies of Jose Rizal?

One of the major controversies regarding Rizal is about the Retraction Document. This document is one of the proofs regarding the friars' claim that Rizal retracted a few days before his execution. Retraction means that he is taking back what he said against the catholic church in the Philippines and the friars. If this were true, it would mean that Rizal went back to become a Catholic again after being a mason in Europe. Some say he did this in order to marry his Irish partner, Josephine Bracken, Another controversy with Rizal is whether or not he actually married Josephine Bracken after being a Catholic again. Scholars say that there were no written accounts of the marriage between Rizal and Josephine, but Josephine claims that Rizal actually married him a day before his execution. Another controversy that questions the authenticity of being a national hero of Rizal is whether Rizal was actually in favor of the revolution during that time. Was he a Revolutionist or a Reformist. Did he really wish to free the Philippines from the colonization of Spain, or did he just want to make Philippines a province of Spain?
