yes and no, but mostly yes. i will explain why. modern archaeology has shown that most barangays in pre spanish invasion philippines had a writing system, some barangays using babayin. however, like in much of the world before the 17th century, only a minority knew how to read and write. the only reason why people wrote is so that it could be read aloud. while we can assume that some philippine folklore could have been written, not much have been found. but instead, pre colonial philippine literature exists still today, as epic folklore legends and stories passed down from generation to generation. while it was not written until the spanish invasion, it can be assumed as literature, like the illiad or folklore of the nordic deities of europe, which were folklore stories written much much later than when they first appeared.
