Western philosophy traces its roots to ancient Greece, with notable contributions from philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Over the centuries, philosophical thought evolved through movements such as medieval scholasticism, the Renaissance, Enlightenment, and modern philosophy, encompassing diverse schools of thought like empiricism, rationalism, existentialism, and postmodernism. Western philosophy has significantly influenced intellectual, cultural, and social developments worldwide.
Søren Kierkegaard was a Danish philosopher, theologian, and poet known for his critiques of rationalism and his exploration of existentialism. He is considered one of the founders of existential philosophy and his works have had a significant influence on modern philosophy and theology.
Descartes is considered the father of modern philosophy because of his focus on reason and skepticism, as well as his method of doubt in seeking certainty. His works, such as "Meditations on First Philosophy," laid the foundation for modern philosophical inquiry and shaped the development of Western philosophy.
Modern philosophy is called modern to distinguish it from ancient and medieval philosophy. It refers to the philosophical thought that emerged in the 17th century, characterized by a focus on reason, skepticism, and questioning traditional beliefs. Modern philosophy marked a shift towards more empirical and scientific approaches to understanding the world.
David Hume is important because he was a key figure in the Scottish Enlightenment, known for his influential works in philosophy, especially in empiricism and skepticism. He made significant contributions to moral and political philosophy, epistemology, and psychology, challenging traditional philosophical ideas and paving the way for modern philosophical thought.
Perennialism emphasizes the importance of teaching universal truths and enduring knowledge. Progressivism focuses on hands-on learning, critical thinking, and experiential education. Essentialism advocates for a core curriculum of essential knowledge and skills. Existentialism emphasizes individuality, freedom, and self-fulfillment in education. Constructivism posits that learning is an active process where individuals construct their own understanding and knowledge.
