Enlightenment is also called the Age of Reason. It was a literary and philosophical movement in the mid 17th and 18th centuries. The leading voices of the Enlightenment combined confidence in the human mind and faith in the power of reason. They challenged the authority of tradition, and the Church. They applied the rules of reason and common sense to the institutions and social practices. They wanted to reform thought, society, and government for the sake of human liberty. Their goals were to get rid of the arbirtary power, wanted freedom of speech, of trade. (Diderot, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Kant, Voltaire, Adam Smith).
