Not much is known about Socrates' early life as historical records are limited. It is believed that he was born around 470 BC in Athens to a stonemason father and a midwife mother. Socrates worked as a stonecutter and then as a hoplite in the Peloponnesian War before becoming a philosopher.

Historians ascribe varying degrees of reliability to these accounts.
One of Socrates' most notable friends was Plato, who was a philosopher and writer known for documenting many of Socrates' teachings in his dialogues. Another friend of Socrates was Xenophon, a historian and philosopher who also wrote about Socrates' life and ideas.
