Iron rusts easily, so coins are rarely made of that metal. However, many countries use steel in their coins, among them the UK, Canada, and the EU.

Why does old coins attract to a magnet?

Old coins may contain iron or steel components, which can make them slightly magnetic. Coins made of metals like nickel or steel can exhibit magnetic properties due to their composition. Magnetic attraction to old coins is a result of the metal content within the coins.

What type of coins are magnetic?

the ones that lift up when you put a magnet over them.

Why are some coins magnetic?

It's simply a matter of what metal(s) the coin is made from. Some metals like iron, steel, and nickel are attracted to a magnet while others like copper, gold, and silver are not. Up till recent years iron and steel have rarely been used for coinage because the metals rust easily. That's what happened during WWII when the US struck steel cents to save copper for ammunition. The coins were coated with zinc but as soon as the zinc wore off a bit the coins rusted. Canada has large supplies of nickel so for many years its 5¢ coins were made of pure nickel and would stick to a magnet. From 1968 to the early part of this century Canadian dimes, quarters, halves, and dollars were made of nickel as well. (US nickels are actually mostly copper so they don't stick, btw.) Within the last decade new methods have been developed that allow steel to be used more readily, so many countries have switched to steel coins because they're less expensive to produce. As of 2012 the US is very tentatively considering steel coins as well but the decision will likely take years due to political gridlock.

What kinds of things attract magnets?

Materials containing iron, nickel, or cobalt are attracted to magnets. This includes items such as iron nails, nickel coins, and certain types of jewelry. Additionally, magnetic fields can also attract items made of steel, which is an alloy containing iron.

Why is copper-plated steel is now used for 1p and 2p coins?

Copper-plated steel is used for 1p and 2p coins because it is a cost-effective alternative to pure copper, making the coins more affordable to produce. Additionally, the steel core provides durability and strength to the coins, extending their lifespan in circulation.

Do coins have iron in them?

Some do. You can use a magnet to find out which ones (the ferrous ones will be magnetic).CorrectionIron is not used in modern coins because it's too brittle. Many countries however mint coins from steel, but it's almost always plated with another metal to prevent rust.

What coins rusts?

All coins, even gold and silver, will tarnish, but rust is iron oxide, so only coins with iron in them will rust. The only ones I can think of are the steel 1943 US cents and some European Coins from the WW2 era.

Why are coins up to 1991 magnetic?

No British coin is magnetic. Prior to 1992 all British coins were made from non-ferrous metals. The copper-plated steel 1 Penny and 2 Pence coins were first issued in 1992. The nickel-plated steel 5 Pence and 10 Pence coins were first issued in 2011. These are the only British coins in circulation that can be attracted to a magnet since steel is an alloy of iron, a ferrous metal.
