No. Gliders had been long around before the Wrights, Otto Lilienthal, whose work they studied extensively. Lilienthal was among the first (of many) to build gliders that were reliable and flew predictably, time after time.
In aviation, 'firsts' are pretty irrelevant. To do something repeatedly and reliably is a much better proof of concept. The Wright flyer was one of the last glider-inspired designs before the 'modern' layout became the norm.
"To invent an airplane is nothing. To build one is something. But to fly is everything." -Otto Lilienthal

The Wright brothers used a launching rail system and a simple wooden dolly to get their glider off the ground. They would run along the rail system attached to the glider to build up enough speed for takeoff, while the dolly helped stabilize and guide the glider during the initial phase of the flight.
The Wright brothers invented their glider to fulfill their ambition of achieving powered flight. They used the glider to test their ideas on aerodynamics and control systems that would later be incorporated into their first powered airplane.
the wright brother invented the glider in the 1890s it was a successful one similar to a airplane but without the engine
The glider was invented in the late 19th century, with significant developments in the early 1900s by pioneers like Otto Lilienthal and the Wright brothers. These inventors paved the way for advancements in aviation technology that eventually led to powered flight.
When the Wright brothers had trouble controlling their glider, they made adjustments to the wing-warping technique to improve stability and control. They also studied bird flight to gain insights into aerodynamics, which ultimately helped them achieve controlled powered flight with their first airplane in 1903.

In 1900, the Wright brothers built the first glider. Most of their tests of the glider did not contain a pilot in the first year, and they continued to develop it for several years.

The Wright brothers first flew their 1900 glider at Kitty Hawk.
