Black objects are black because almost all the light that falls on them is absorbed into the material. Little or no light is reflected back toward your eye, therefore you see black. That light that is absorbed ultmately becomes heat.

Black absorbs light better, that's why it looks black. White absorbs no light, but reflects it; that's why it looks white in white light. The only thing that the color black absorbs is heat that why if you would put a black towel and a white towel the black would would be hotter.

Black, or any dark color, will absorb radiant heat faster than light colors (such as white).

The reason is simple, a "dark" color is absorbing more light than a "light" color -

thus less light gets to your eyes. The light that is absorbed turns into heat.

A material looks black because it is absorbing light in the visible spectrum (That is the colours of the rainbow Red through to Violet) so it is not reflecting these parts of the light spectrum back into our eyes. Something that looks green does so because it is the only part of the spectrum that is rebounding off the object into our eyes.

So black absorbs much more energy (light is a form of energy) than other colors because every other color reflecting back at least some of the light. Some of this energy becomes heat depending on the material.

Also, one part of the spectrum that is not visible to us is infrared. This is heat radiation. Most black materials absorb this part of the spectrum as well as the visible part and therefore get hotter.

It is possible to have a black material that is reflective to infra-red, so it absorbs visible light but reflects some of the invisible spectrum. One paint company has developed a paint that reflects a lot of the heat back so dark colours stay cooler. This was difficult to do but worth it because it helps the paint to last longer.
