The word tension means resistance or apprehension. Tension is commonly used to describe situations where emotions run high or there is a disagreement. For instance the saying "You could cut the tension with a knife" means that there is so much anger or awkwardness between people that it is a physical object. It can also me muscle tension or tightness.
