In electromagnetic waves energy is transmitted as electric and magnetic fields. In sound waves energy is transmitted as vibration of air particles. In water waves the energy is transmitted as vibration of water particles.

The energy that travels by waves can be alot of things but the most popular energy that it travels in is sound you can tell this easily by the sounding of the answer eg; sound rays it doesn't sound right but when you say sound waves it has that ring to it like light rays, hope this answers your question.
