Certain kinds of radiation can kill you by causing cancer. Radiation is actually the emittance (by unstable atoms) of tiny particles or packets of energy (aka rays) known as alpha and beta particles and gamma rays. These particles and rays are the right size to interact with the cells of your body, ripping through them, or otherwise damaging them. These damaged cells may continue to reproduce in their damaged state causing abnormal masses or tumors that disrupt normal body function.

*Radiation can kill you other ways too.. and this is a bad description of radiation.

The radiation contained in the cavity of a microwave oven is at a frequency of 2.54 GHz.

This frequency was chosen since water molecules resonate at this frequency. Since they

resonate, they vibrate vigorously and heat up.

So basically...

...Microwaves heat food by sending out waves that cause the water molecules in a food

item to vibrate rapidly. this creates an energy that presents itself as heat to cook the

food. Ideally, the waves are contained within the microwave because the door is closed

as it is turned on, releasing waves and cooking the food. Problems arise when living

tissue is exposed to these waves. People typically prefer to avoid situations where

their tissues can be cooked.

Is it true or false that microwave ovens use a type of infrared wave?

Microwave ovens employ microwave radiation, which is lower in frequency than infrared radiation, to generate the heat in the food they cook. They don't use infrared radiation per se.

Why does heat from a grill travel to the food through radiation and not conduction or convection?

Although some of the cooking in a grill is baking or roasting, the nature of grilling is radiation. To demonstrate that, put metal between your heat source and the meat and it will cook differently.

Risks and benefits of using microwave Radiation?

microwave radiation can cook your food, and mobile phones use microwaves (but they need transmition towers) If you are exposed to microwaves for a long time (like pressing your face against the microwave oven to check on your food) then you can develop cataracts. Also, microwaves from mobile phones can affect certain parts of your brain, so be careful with your cellphone, especially if you're young and growing.

Does an electric grill use conduction convection or radiation?

Depending on the scenario, it could be an example of all three, but the most common transfer of energy through heat associated with a heating iron would be conduction. If this is for school and it is possible to have more than one answer, then it would be conduction and radiation.

Do any microwaves use light to help cook?

Microwaves use radiation to cook food and radiation is a form of light. They do not use actual light bulbs to cook though.

Which is safer a microwave or an oven?

An oven as it does not use radiation to cook food.

How do a microwave cook food?

By bombarding the food with electromagnetic radiation (microwaves, which are tuned to resonance with water molecules).

Can radiation cook a potato and why?

Yes. Microwave radiation causes polarized molecules (like water) in foods to vibrate, which generates heat, which cooks the food.

What is the use of microwave oven?

The use of a microwave oven is to cook food or heat it quickly and efficiently using radiation.

How does a microwave cook?

Just by using radiation which is able to displace and heat up the water molecules inside your food

Explain how microwaves generate heat to cook food?

The microwaves cause vibrations in the moisture molecules in the food and the friction causes heat. In this way microwaves cause food to cook from the inside out and is why it does not create browning on the outside.
