It would be a much smaller task to answer the question "How was science not used in the creation of cars?" Science is STILL very relevant and necessary in the furthering development of not only cars, but nearly any and all products, items, and technology bought, sold, and/or in development or manufacture require some sort of help from science at some level along the way. But as to the question at hand, Science helped automobiles starting with the the cavemen era.

The wheel and and the discovery of fire are two of the most necessary and basic fundamental discoveries from the most simple Science, that today, make auto travel possible. Fast Forward...Science allowed the discovery of petroleum based fossil fuels and the refining processes that afforded us the stable and predictable burning fuels such as gas and diesel. Science is also responsible for the knowledge of ever improving air/fuel atomization techniques and more efficient flow of intake and exhaust gases through the cycles of the internal combustion engine which continually improve power, efficiency, and reliability of automobiles to this very day.

Science also has carried continuous improvements in safety, comfort, and style throughout the era of the automobile. Air bags, back up cameras, computers for different aspects of control, heat, air conditioning, window rattling audio systems, wireless entry and keyless technology, improved lighting platforms, crumple zone engineering, safety glass, satellite monitoring and communications....the list goes on and on. So, when you find yourself next riding in an automobile, look around you and marvel at all the wonders of technology afforded us by good ole' Science. You'll be hard pressed to find anything there in the car not affected by the benefits of it.
