Balloons.
Also can make your voice go squeaky when inhaled.
Sulphurhexaflouride does the opposite and makes your voice go deep, the flouride should burn your lungs but the sulphur neatralises it, so it is perfectly safe (though as with Helium not in large quantities)
Helium-3 (3He) is being looked at as a power source in second generation fusion reactors. It also has uses in nuclear instrumentation, partucularly for its effectiveness in neutron detection. It has substantially different cryogenic properties than 4He, so its use in low temperature investigation is continuing. There is an interesting medical imaging application that makes use of 3He to look at real-time breath by breath lung ventilation. Use the link below and read more about this interesting isotope of helium in the article posted by our friends at Wikipedia.
1) Floating stuff. Helium is much lighter than air, so can be used to float balloons and airships.
2) Cooling. Liquid helium is extremely cold, 3-4 degrees above absolute zero. It's used to cool particle accelerators, supercomputers, and other industrial/scientific technology.
3) Leak detection. Helium atoms are extremely small, so they require a very small hole to fit through. So if there is a leak, even an extremely small one, helium will go through it. Hydrogen would be even better, except it is extremely volatile, especially under pressure.
Cooling superconducting magnets, a "shielding gas" to use when welding aluminum, detecting leaks in gas piping.
Helium is used to blow balloons up !
