What is a difference between dark and black?

Dark matter is something that scientists can't really explain yet. Normal matter is everything that you see around you. Scientists know that dark matter exists because the patterns in gravity and the patterns in matter don't match. For this reason, they assumed that there was "dark matte", a type of matter that cannot be detected as easily as matter.

Dark refers to the absence of light, while black is our perception of that absence.

Darkness is about the actual phenomena, while blackness is the way that we, as people, experience that darkness.

similarly, electromagnetic radiation at wavelengths of 700 nm is processed and experienced by humans as 'red'. In the absence of humans to experience it, there is no such 'red' phenomena.

...of course, there's also the use of "dark(ness)" and "black(ness)" in reference to pigments. Through the additive process of combining the primary pigments, black is achieved. Black in this context would be an absolute, the darkest 'color' possible. Dark and darkness would be the adjective used to describe the degree to which a color has approached the state of blackness. "that is a very dark blue" being a blue that is closer in darkness to black than a blue lacking the 'dark' modifier... it is 'darker' than other blues.

A dark-colored object is dark because it reflects only a small portion of the light that strikes it. The rest is absorbed. A shadow is dark because something is preventing light from striking it.
