A gallon is a unit of measure of volume. I think the volume was selected arbitrarily, as for example the U.S. gallon is slightly smaller [less volume] than the Imperial gallon [used in Canada]. A U.S. gallon is subdivided in smaller units of measure. There are: 8 fluidounces per cup. 2 cups, or 16 fluid ounces, per pint. 2 pints, or 32 fluid ounces, per quart. and 4 quarts, or 128 fluid ounces per U.S. gallon.
