A method of describing how many electrons are in the highest energy level in an electron. It is done by writing an element's symbol (i.e. for Hydrogen, H; and for Neon, Ne) and then placing dots around the symbol in a counter-clockwise manner. The maximum dots there can ever be is 8 (there are theorems that prove it, I believe the Aufbau Principle is the one). Their are several teachings in which the order the dots should be drawn. However, there is a consensus that up to two dots may be placed on any side of the symbol (2 on the right, 2 on top, 2 on the left, and 2 on bottom).

The dots are used to represent the outermost "s" and "p" electrons only. The number of "s" and "p" electrons used (valence electrons) is equal to the group number in which the element is found. Only the representative have elements have '"s" and "p" subshells. Example; Write the dot notation for the element Calcium. 1. Since Calcium (Ca) is located in Group 2 on the Periodic Table, it has 2 valence electrons. Therefore, it will only contain two dots. Ca:

The dot diagram for Neon is made up of two shells with the first shell having two 'dots' and the second having eight. This because the atomic number is ten. How to draw it: Have one dot in the middle and draw two circles around it. On the circle closest to the middle have two dots on it. Have eight on the outside circle.

1s2 2s2 2p6, or [He] 2s2 2p6, or just [Ne] since the configurations for noble gases are so trivial you're just supposed to know them.
