A physical thing that is transparent allows light to pass through. Clear glass or plastic, even if tinted, is transparent. You can see objects clearly and with a great deal of detail when looking through something that is transparent. Think of the similarites of the words appearance and transparent.

Objects that are translucent allow light to pass through, but the light is so diffused that objects cannot be seen. A sheet of ordinary paper is an example. You can hold a sheet of paper up to a light and you can easily see that light passes through it. but you cannot see with any kind of detail what is behind the paper.
