It depends what the fuse is protecting.

A fuse is a weak point in an electrical circuit that is designed to melt and disconnect the circuit before it is damaged or becomes dangerous (eg catches fire)

Depending what is being protected a fuse could typically be between 1mA (0.001 amps) and several thousand amps. Bigger and smaller exist for special applications.

How do you size a fuse?

The fuse protects the cable it is feeding therefore in UK upto 10A for 1.0mm cable, upto 15A for 1.5mm cable and upto 20A for 2.5mm cable. This is for installation type (solid core copper) cable not flex. In the UK and the rest of the EU (230V) 1 Kw load = 4A so 5A fuse should be OK. 2KW = 8A, 3KW = 12A so use 13A Fuse.

Why do fuses come in different sizes?

Fuses come in different sizes to accommodate varying levels of electrical current. The size of a fuse is determined by its ability to handle a specific amount of current before breaking and preventing damage to the electrical circuit. Using the correct size fuse helps protect the circuit from overloading and potential fire hazards.

What energy does a fuse convert electrical energy?

A fuse converts electrical energy into thermal energy. When an excessive current passes through a fuse, it causes the fuse wire to heat up and melt, breaking the circuit and preventing damage to other components.

Why are fuses so important?

Fuses are essential for safety. A fuse is a piece of thin wire in a fireproof enclosure, and the fuse is placed in series with an electrical circuit. When a fault occurs in the equipment, excessive current could flow, which causes the fuse wire to melt, cutting off the supply. Without the fuse some other part of the circuit would overheat and perhaps cause a fire. Because the fuse is the weakest link, it protects the rest of the circuit. Fuses have to be chosen for the size of circuit they feed. A standard fuse labelled 13 amps as used in the UK is designed to let 13 amps through, and currents above that value will blow the fuse, although 14-15 amps would probably not do that over a short period. So fuses are very important because they reduce the risk of fire.

How does the fuse wire save your electrical appliances?

The fuse wire is rated for a specific amount of amperage. If the amperage exceeds that rating, the fuse wire will quickly melt. The current flow in the circuit is interrupted, thereby protecting the appliance from an overload condition.
