The first working laser was demonstrated on May 16, 1960 by US scientist Theodore Maiman at Hughes Research Laboratories.

Since then, lasers have become a multi-billion dollar industry. By far the largest single application of lasers is in optical storage devices such as compact disc and DVD players, in which a semiconductor laser less than a millimeter wide scans the surface of the disc. The second-largest application is fiber-optic communication. Other common applications of lasers are bar code readers, laser printers and laser pointers.

The groundwork for the laser began with 19th century optics.

Then, in 1917, Albert Einstein, in his paper Zur Quantentheorie der Strahlung (On the Quantum Theory of Radiation), laid the foundation for the invention of the laser and its predecessor, the maser, in a ground-breaking rederivation of Max Planck's law of radiation based on the concepts of probability coefficients (later to be termed 'Einstein coefficients') for the absorption, spontaneous emission, and stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation.

In 1928, Rudolf W. Ladenburg confirmed the existence of stimulated emission and negative absorption. In 1939, Valentin A. Fabrikant predicted the use of stimulated emission to amplify "short" waves.

In 1947, Willis E. Lamb and R. C. Retherford found apparent stimulated emission in hydrogen spectra and made the first demonstration of stimulated emission.

In 1950, Alfred Kastler (Nobel Prize for Physics 1966) proposed the method of optical pumping, which was experimentally confirmed by Brossel, Kastler and Winter two years later.

In 1952, the principle of the maser was described by Nikolay Basov and Alexander Prokhorov from the Lebedev Institute of Physics at an All-Union Conference on Radio-Spectroscopy held by USSR Academy of Sciences.

In 1953, Charles H. Townes, J. P. Gordon, and H. J. Zeiger built the first ammonia maser (a microwave beam generator) at Columbia University.

What are some dangers or risks of laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is generally safe when performed by trained professionals, but like any cosmetic treatment, it does come with some potential risks. Common side effects include temporary redness, swelling, or mild irritation in the treated area, which usually settles within a few hours to a couple of days. In rare cases, improper settings or inexperienced handling can cause burns, blistering, or changes in skin pigmentation, especially on darker or recently tanned skin. This is why choosing a reputable clinic for services like Men Laser Rozelle is important, as experienced practitioners use the correct technology and settings to minimise risks and ensure safe, effective results.

Where can I get an industrial laser that I can attach to the head of a shark ?

BigLaser.com has plenty of industrial lasers, but I still don't see why you can't come up with something more efficient than a shark with a laser beam attached to its head. Industrial Laser Systems should have exactly the industrial laser you're looking for.

What colors do laser pointers come in?

Laser pointers are available in red, blue, green, yellow, and violet (purple). Green laser pointers are the most preferred of all the colors because they are the brightest, most visible, and can be seen the farthest distances.

What are laser thermometers used for?

Laser thermometers are used to measure the surface temperature of an object. These types of thermometers come in handy when an object is very large or too far away.
