Because transverse waves like electromagnetic waves (light) move side to side when the travel, and we can limit the side-to-side motion of a wave, and still allow the wave to pass. In longitudinal waves, we cannot limit longitudinal motion without actually "blocking" the wave.

Picture two transverse waves that are moving in the same direction. One is moving up and down as it travels and the other is moving side to side. We can install a barrier of vertical slits in the path of the waves. The vertical slits will accommodate the wave that moves up and down. The other wave will be trying to move from side to side when it impinges on the barrier, and it will be "blocked" there. The vertical slits polarize the wave.

With longitudinal waves, there is no equivalent "filter" or barrier we can use to polarize the wave.

Sound waves are easier to make. You can just talk and get sound waves while the light waves are more dense and take up more time.

of it depend upon the non mechanical waves and the mechanical waves. sound waves are paralell to the motion of the sound it is longitudinal while light waves are transverse

Why cant sound waves travel through foam?

Because sound waves carry energy particles called clots and clots are too large to pass through the low density material as foam

Is bats produce supersonic sound waves?

the bats do not produce supersonic sounds.they produce ultrasonic sounds.Thats the reason we cant hear them

Can compression waves be transmitted through a vacuum of space?

no the only waves that can go through space is the electromagnetic waves and it doesnt need sound or matter to travel.compressional waves have to come off of something and travel{like sound} it cant travel because there is nothing to travel through.the vacuum of space is just nothing and only light can go through as well, but it takes time.

Why can light waves travel through a vacuum but water waves cannot?

That is correct. Light is a moving electromagnetic wave, and the energy it contains is carried in the moving electric and moving magnetic components of the wave. Light can move through a vacuum, and it would rather go through that than air or anything else (which scatters the energy). Sound is mechanical energy, and the energy of the sound is transferred into the medium through which it is travelling. As the energy of sound is carried by the medium, the vacuum of space will not support a sound wave.

Kind of electromagnetic radiation used to examining the inside of a weild in a steel oil pipe?

I think they use frequency modulated sound waves rather than electromagnetic waves as to be honest i cant think of an em wave that would work.

Why cant sound waves travel through a vaccuum?

No medium to carry the sound energy.

Why can't sound waves travel though space?

sound waves cant travel through space because there is no oxygen, and if there is no oxygen there is nothing to carry the sound waves. youre welcom theSas

Explain why cant sound travel through vacuums?

there is no air in a vaccum. and sound needs air for the sound waves to travel through.

Why cant sound travel from planet to planet?

Because space is a Vacuum, there are not enough gas molecules around to transfer the sound waves.

How is sound produce in liquid?

vibrations caused by the sound waves travel thru the water making the water vibrate causing sound. that is why you cant hear someone talk under water at great distances. the water is denser than the sound waves

Do sound waves stop when losing hearing?

in a way, but there are still some there, humans just cant hear them.

Why cant we hear each other on the moon?

The Moon has no atmosphere, only vacuum. There is nothing for the sound waves to travel in.

Why can radio waves travel through space but sound waves cant?

Sound waves are longitudinal waves that need a medium to propagate. This can be air, water or solids. Sound waves work like a truck hitting a line of cars. The wave travels through the line from back to front but would not if there were no cars. Radio waves, like light are electromagnetic waves and don't require a medium to radiate. That is why we see Sunlight but do not hear the constant roar of the Sun's fusion activity.
