Because the wood's density (which is a measure of mass in a certain volume) is less than that of water, while iron's is higher. Hence why 1 cubic centimeter of wood weighs less than the same volume of water.

Answer:That is because wood has a lower density than water ( mass per volume). Rock has a higher density than water and sinks. Answer:This isn't an entirely true statement. There is a rock that floats, which is pumice, and there is wood that sinks, like ironwood. Generally speaking though, usually rock is denser than water and wood is generally less dense. Anything that is denser than the water itself will sink and anything less dense than water will float.

It has to do with density and water displacement. When you put something in water the object displaces an amount of water equal to the volume of the object in the water. Wood is not extremely dense, so the volume of water that the wood displaces pushes back on the wood with enough force to allow the wood to float. Lead however is very dense, so even though it displaces the same amount of water (if the volumes were the same) the force of gravity on the lead is much stronger than the opposing force of the water, and it sinks.

This phenomenon is know as Archimedes principle. Wood floats because it is able to displace the water equal to it's wait by sinking a little bit into the water. That's why it sinks a little bit not completely. Wood has that feature because of it's low density. Any shape of wood will float because it has a very low density compared to water. Metal in the other hand has high density and if in the solid state will not be able to displace enough water in order to float. Interestingly a metal vessel will float made up of same metal block of same weight. This happens because of it's expanded surface and the shape and now it is able to displace enough water by sinking a little bit. We know that cruise ships are made of metal and we always reach back home.

why wood coated from gum sink float on water

Why do paperclips float on water?

Paperclips sink in water because they have a higher density. Unlike wood, a paperclip will sink not float.

Which will float in water a 1kg of block of wood or a 1 g block og Aluminum?

In most cases the wood will float (there are a few dense tropical woods that will not) and the metal will sink. things float because they displace more weight of water than their own volume if not they sink

Will the toy car float or sink in water?

It all depends on what it is made of. Some made of metal will sink and others made of wood will not. Also the amount of air inside the enclosed part will also determine if it will or will not float.

it will float, with it being a soft metal, try it for yourself

Does a toy car sink or float?

That depends what it's made of ! A metal one will sink, but a wooden or plastic one will float.

Why does some wood sink and some wood float?

There are many different types of wood. Some woods are denser than water and will therefore sink. Some woods aren't as dense as water so will float. Also if the wood becomes saturated when placed in water it will most likely sink.

Why do boats float and ships sink?

Provided the boats and the ships displace their weight in water without the water coming inboard, they will float and not sink. A boat made of wood is likely to float even when full of water because wood tends to float. It is all to do with displacement and freeboard.

Which will float on water a 1-kg block of wood or a 1-kg block of aluminum?

Wood will. A solid block of aluminum will sink. Things float when their density is less than water. There are some woods that sink.

How can you separate copper objects with wood?

put water in the mixture, the wood will float and the copper will sink. :D

How come things sink and float?

Objects sink or float depending upon their densities. For example wood floats on water because the density of wood is less than that of water, while a piece of iron would sink in water as its density is more than water.
