The molecules in a liquid are densely packed than in a gas. The shorter distance between the molecules allows the energy to transfer more efficiently between molecules, therefore allowing more heat to pass between them.

I'm not entirely sure of this myself, but the way I had it explained to me is that the molecules in a solid are more densely packed in a liquid. The shorter distance between the molecules allows the energy to transfer more efficiently between molecules, therefore allowing more heat to pass between them.
