Why is using a lot of energy bad for the environment?

It's not using energy what is bad for the planet, but the way we get that energy. Electricity comes from burning fossil fuels mostly. This produces greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming.

The first reason would most commonly be that it is a fossil fuel which pollutes our earth just as bad as littering all of your days garbage on the sidewalk. Secondly, it our world has a limited amount of fossil fuels and most scientists think that we will run out of all fossil fuels in less thatn 200 years. That means that we must use our gas sparingly so that you don't run out of it quickly. When you use gas in your car it can leak and cause local animals to die or get sick. Especially in the big cities like New York and Boston.

Electricity in itself is not bad. The methods of generation can be. A Hydro Dam produces almost no pollution. Nuclear power plants are next in line, emitting only carbon dioxide into the air. Coal generating plants are the worst.

Energy cannot be produced without using some resources. The more energy that is required, the more resources must be used to produce it.

This applies to renewable energy sources as well. An example is wood: while it can readily be regrown, land, (a finite resource) must be used for this, the wood must be processed and transported for its use, and this requires energy to be expended. No process is 100% efficient so there are some losses and some some damage, pollution or infrastructure required to process anything. Logging tracks require maintenance, tools require maintenance and manufacturing and so on.

By minimizing the energy required, the impact of the production of that energy on the environment is reduced.
