Why did castles have square towers?

The towers on early castles were square until it was realised that incoming projectiles, rocks from catapults and cannon balls did considerable damage where ever they hit the towers. Shot striking off-centre would have some of the force, and hopefully the ball or rock, deflected. This turned out to be the case.
