The efficiency of a car engine will probably increase if the muffler is removed, but this is not certain because the muffler offers some resonance in clearing the exhaust. The length of the exhaust pipe, and its shape is often a complicated task. But if it is driven on a very cold day the situtation is more clear, the efficiency will improve, often markedly.

∙ 14y agoAir contracts when cold and expands when warm. So a given volume of cold air will contain more molecules and than the same volume of warm air. Automobile engines (particularly engines without sophisticated electronic management systems) take in the same volume of air every stroke.
In cold air this means that there is more oxygen in the cylinder when combustion occurs resulting in a more powerful explosion. Of course, there is also more nitrogen and trace gases like C2O but they are irrelevant.
Many cars have hood scoops and air channels that bring in outside air rather than taking air from under the hood which will be warmed by the waste heat from the radiator and engine.
