Beebalm is a stately native of North America that blooms for a few weeks in late spring or early summer. It is named for the bees which pollinate its flowers. These flowers draw many different species of bees large and small, making each one a Biology lesson unto itself.

The plants can be found in most of the Eastern United States where they blend with other native perennial wildflowers at forest and meadow edges and other open wildlands. The leaves of these plants were used by Native Americans to make medicinal tea, and they became a China tea substitute for colonists after the Boston Tea Party. The English tea boycott was the primary event that brought these beautiful flowers from the wild and into gardens. Most of today's plants are varieties that feature improved resistance to mildew and larger flowers.
