It depends on where you are. In the Southern Hemisphere (the bottom half of planet earth), for example in Australia or South America, the growing season is October-March: April is almost the beginning of winter. In the northern hemisphere, April is a good time to plant unless you are pretty far north. For example in Maine in the United States, or in Canada, most vegetables don't go in the ground until May.
