It is very hard to tell what you have from your question- is it a Tulip Tree, or Magnolia? These are smaller to medium sized, they make a beautiful pink or white flower with a thick, strong, flowery smell. They bloom early in the summer/late spring and only last a week or two, then the petals fall from the branches leaving a carpet under the tree of fallen flowers. Maybe you could describe it better to help with its identification.
