Dirt would be a good place, the more fertile the better.

Vegetables need at least 6 to 8 hour of sunlight. So a place that allows this amount of direct sun would be great.

Additionally, if you don't have a large backyard for a garden you can grow vegetables in containers or pots.

Finally if you don't have faith in the type of soil you have you can always use raised beds for the vegetables.

Hydroponics, roof gardens, vertical gardens and upside down gardens are becoming more and more popular.
