The state flower is the California poppy, a beautiful wildflower that blooms golden on the hillsides in the spring. This rather delicate beauty can be remarkably drought resistant, thriving in difficult dry spots with less than ideal soil. What it does demand is good drainage, so this poppy is most often found on hills, cliffs and elevated locations.

Technically Eschscholzia californica is perennial, but it most often behaves like an annual, living for a single season. In California it begins growth very early in the locally mild winters, developing a good tap root to reach trapped moisture deeper down. This is vital because in this region rains cease early in the spring leaving the poppies with little sustenance during their bloom season. The flowers feature large orange-yellow petals, lasting for just a short time, but each plant may produce flowers over a long period if it is well established.
