You can build most of the furniture you see in project books, etc. with pine if you are not fussy about the finish. Will it last? We own pine furniture built up to 300 years ago. It does not look bright and shiny anymore, but it looks fine if you are into real Colonial look.
Most #2 grade 2 x 4 studs are labeled "SPF" for Spruce, Pine, Fir. The pine is usually Ponderosa Pine.
