Generally speaking trees can be grouped into three categories:

Deciduous (those which loose their leaves annualy. These are mostly the hardwoods: Oak, Beech, Hornbeam, Walnut etc.)

Semi-Evergreen (Those which retain their leaves for a large portion of the winter)

Evergreen (Those which keep their leaves for life. these are mostly the softwoods: Pine, Sequoia, Cypress, Cedar etc.)

There are many variations to this theme including some hardwood trees which are evergreen such as the Holm Oak (Quercus ilex) and some softwoods which are deciduous such as the Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). Semi-Evergreen trees are a bit of a misnoma as they are in fact deciduous but given the right conditions will retain their leaves for most or all of the year.
