The poem was written by Dorothy Law Nolte, an educator and family counselor from California, US. The poem was written in 1954 and consisted of 14 lines, before she revised it into 19 lines. In 1998, she expanded the poem into a book entitled Children Learn What They Live. Consisting of 19 chapters reflecting the final version of the poem, each chapter of the book explains the corresponding line in the poem. Dorothy Law Nolte died in 2005 at 81.
