The message in Rabeendranadha Tagore's song, Leave This Chanting, has Universal appeal.
Rabeendranadha Tagore was an educationalist, social reformer and poet. His poems, plays, short stories and novels enjoy universal appeal. He was a painter also. In a house where Veena, Thabala and Mridangam resounded without stop, it was no wonder, music and rhythm found it's way into his heart. Shantinikethan was a unique model institution founded by him. He is considered the National Poet of India. His poetical collection Gitanjali was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. Along with Gandhiji he was a leading light in the Indian Independence Movement. His conception of a free India is contained in his poem, Where The Mind Is Without Fear.
Leave This Chanting is an advice to worshippers everywhere, to seek God outside temples, among the labourers. The worshippers sing mantras and count rudrakshas inside the lone, dark corners of their shut temples. One will wonder how God can rest in such places. If they open their eyes, the worshippers can see that their God is not before them and that they are blind. God has gone out among the tillers, stone-breakers and path-makers, staying with them in the heavy heat of the Sun and the downpouring shower of the Rain, without minding his clothes being covered with dust. The poet advises that, those who seek God should put off their holy mantles, wear the workers' uniforms and, like God, come down to the dusty soil.
The worshippers answer that they are after deliverance, i.e., mukthi or moksha. In poet's opinion, mukthi is not the leaving this world. It is not detachment, but divine attachment. God created this world and has decided to stay with us all, forever. How beautiful, tender, ardent and comely that God would be! This conception of God is unique, and has universal appeal. We feel, he is one among us. He has joyfully taken upon him the responsibility of preserving his creation. Even God does not seek moksha. He has come to stay with us and he likes being bonded to this world.
The worshippers are living in a world of incence, flowers and meditation which displeases God. They should leave that illusionary world, to stand by him. There is no harm in their clothes becoming tattered and stained like God's, because they are nearing God. Those who seek God should meet him and stand by him in toil and in his sweat of brow.
