A dragon terrorized Geatland while Beowulf was king. Beowulf felt it was his duty to defend his people by fighting the dragon so that is what he did. His men, all but Wiglaf, deserted him while he was in need when up in flames. Wiglaf helped Beowulf but before they killed the dragon the dragon had bore his tusks into Beowulf's neck. Once the dragon was killed the wound was overflowing with blood and Beowulf knew he was dying. So in answer, the dragon killed Beowulf by digging his tusks into Beowulf's neck during battle.
