Beowulf was Self confident. He may come across as arrogant and prideful at times but that is only because he boasts as if it was him showing he is able to kill the monster. It is more of him proving he can do what he says he can do. Sort of like a resume. He knew what he was capable of he just waned other people to know as well.
Beowulf uses a sword to defeat the dragon because his own strength alone is not enough to pierce the dragon's scales. He realizes that he needs the sword to overcome the dragon's defenses and save his people.
Beowulf's father. Ecgtheow was married to the daughter of Hrethel the Geat and with her fathered Beowulf. He is dead by the time Beowulf actually begins but he was a formidable Geat and was allied with Hrothgar, ruler of the Sheildings before Beowulf was born. Having killed Heatholaf, a Wulfing, Ecgtheow was exiled from Geatland for his people's fear that the Wulfings would start a war to avenge Heatholaf. To save him, Hrothgar paid off the Wulfings, saving Geatland from war and securing an alliance between himself and Ecgtheow.
