It grew out of African American traditions.
Classic myths and legends are stories. Rap is a music style.
If someone tells you that rap has roots in African American experiences, but epic poetry is based on Greek and Roman cultures, they are really ignorant and very wrong. Epic poetry is found in all cultures, going back to the Epic of Gilgamesh in ancient Mesapotamia. Beowulf is an Old English epic. African Africans have lots of oral epics such as Lianja. Rap is not epic poetry because it does not tell a story of a supernaturally great hero. The only reason that there are no African American epics is that nobody has got around to writing one yet.

Both use poetic techniques to engage and entertain audiences, and they often address themes of struggle, triumph, and identity. Additionally, both forms of storytelling have been used to reflect and critique the social and cultural values of their respective time periods.

This excerpt from a rap shares similarities with an epic in its storytelling and thematic depth. Both forms often explore grand themes such as struggle, identity, and triumph, while employing vivid imagery and emotional resonance. Additionally, just as epics utilize elevated language and rhythm to convey their narratives, rap often incorporates intricate rhyme schemes and beats to enhance its storytelling. Ultimately, both serve as powerful vehicles for cultural expression and personal reflection.
