Victorian poetry tends to deal with more serious and realistic subjects, such as child labor, slavery, and other such social injustices. It often called for social reform, as in Elizabeth Barrett Browning's "The Cry of the Children." In this poem, Browning write of the atrocity of slavery, and the damage it has done to children and families.
