Beowulf is actualy an Elegiac Epic. Meaning it focuses more on mournful things than the traditional epic. In this way he is an epic hero, but different than those usually dubbed an 'epic hero'. Especially when considering the fight with Grendel, which, considering the time, would have been negative as Grendel was in her right to exact revenge on a blood fued (due to the death of her son) and that her hall was invaded, which was against customs.

Also, of note, is his fight with the dragon, in which he dies a very unheroic death which is not primarily characteristic of earlier epic heroes.
