One of the Republican party's platforms is limited federal government. Whether they truly want that is up for debate.
A strong central government
Yes. If we did not then some things would not be put together right. Something would go wrong from the government without warning. The problem with a string Federal Government has been an issue for some time now. When the federal system becomes this strong it will not be as able to care for the actual needs of the people that it is supposed to care for. The job of the federal Government is to ensure for our defense and to regulate trade between States. It has become so bloated and unyielding that it now controls most of the money supply. It owns car companies and is owed trillions in loans. A strong federal government takes away freedoms to ensure it's own existence. The weaker a federal system that works is, the better it is.

They did not want a strong and dominant federal government.
They shrink it. Republicans want individual freedom and less government control.
One of the principles that many Republicans believe in is that government should have limited power. In places where the government has more power, there are often dictators, and very little freedom for the people.
Because they did not want to repeat the mistakes of the British.
Weak.
They want a FEDERAL government of the minimum size - and cost - required to carry out the enumerated powers of the Constitution REALLY WELL, and to do nothing - and spend nothing - prohibited by the Constitution to federal government. They want state governments of the minimum size required to carry out the government functions the Constitution reserves to states: policing, education, health insurance regulation, criminal courts.
