Well one part is that when Martin Luther (No its not Martin Luther king jr) split the church in half from catholic to protestant, it created competition over political power between the churches. This of course split some of the society in half because of different beliefs. And you have to remember that the catholic pope was losing power with the king really slowly which helped give more freedom to the citizens.
