Amerigo Vespucci was a man who studied the travels and maps made by Christopher Columbus and who first came to the conclusion that the discovered lands could not be the East Indies but must be an other landmass altogether. America may be named after him, but recent studies have shown that the oldest mention of 'America" is referring to the lands discovered by an expedition financed by the British trader Richard Ameryk. The name Vespucci is Italian and refers to "wasps," which are present on the Vespucci family crest.
