Well, Chester Arthur ran against a tough opponent (James Blaine from Maine) and Arthur had severe heart attacks and strokes. So President Arthur wasn’t in the best shape. Arthur HAD pleased Republicans with the Chinese Removal Act that limited Chinese Immigration and the Civil Service Bill. However, he also made Republicans MAD with a bunch of his beliefs such as his administration corruption and his belief on high tarrifs. Also a lot of friends within the Republican Party had turned against Arthur. Still it was a close nomination in which Blaine won.
