President Harding's promise to distance the United States from foreign affairs was hard to achieve because the aftermath of World War I and the League of Nations created pressure for global involvement. Additionally, economic interdependence among nations made isolationism increasingly difficult. Finally, emerging threats such as growing militarization in Europe and East Asia required some level of engagement to ensure national security.
