Communism took different form in different countries, when Russia was communist it still allowed freedom of religion. In China, they murdered many people for having faith until laws changed in China in 2003. In Vietnam there is still suppression and imprisonment for people of faith.

Some Communist societies try to eliminate whatever religion existed in a country prior to the communist revolution. In China, for example, there has been an attempt to eliminate Buddhism, leading to the current conflicts with the Dali Lama and Tibet. Chinese religion is very secular. In Russia, many cathedrals were burned to the ground during the Communist revolution. If you can change a group's religion, you can change their mind frame, but most of the time, this is unsuccessful.
