How does communism limit peoples freedom?

Communism doesn't limit a person's freedom per say, it's more the abuses of power that one can get away with under communism. In a ideal communist country, all of the businesses, factories, farms, etc are owned by the people. Wealth is supposed to be equally distributed so that there are no lower, middle, or upper classes. However, since anarchism doesn't work and there needs to be order in a society, a government is set up. This is when "owned by the people" becomes "owned by the state" and the people who are in charge of all the countries wealth, food, housing, medical, etc will always allocate more to themselves and live high on the hog while everyone else gets shafted. Then, to protect the comfy lifestyle those higher up on the chain have made for themselves, they start to take on a more tyrannical and Propaganda driven government (see CHINA or North Korea).

The major restriction of communism is the lack of incentive to work or to create new goods or services as everyone is paid the same and there is no way of making money selling goods and services as everything is owned by the state. Another major restriction is the one party state rule which causes the development of a totalitarian state and the oppression of free speech in the state, these were the major reasons for the collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

Pure communism as outlined by Karl Marx restricted all important means of production to the hands of the people. During Lenin's leadership, he himself created a policy termed "war communism" which called for the important means of production to be restricted to government control. Only the Communist party could exist under any form of communism. Therefore the power to establish other political parties and/or vote for non -communists was forbidden. Any labor unions were communist controlled.
