Captain John Mason obtained the land that is now New Hampshire through a land grant from the Council for New England in 1622. He named the area "New Hampshire" after the English county of Hampshire, where he had lived. Mason's intentions were to establish a settlement and promote colonization in the region. The name reflects both his origins and the practice of naming new territories after familiar places in England.
One reason to come to New Hampshire is the rich history of the area. Having been one of the first areas of the new world to be colonized by the British and French, New Hampshire is home to some beautiful historic architecture.
