A monarchy is a form of government where a single person is the ruler. In history, the most common forms of monarchy have been where there is a King, a Queen or an Emperor. Some monarchies are "limited" in that there is a parliament, constitution, or other institutions that limit the power of the monarch, the person at the top. In a monarchy that is not limited, the King, Emperor or other person at the top makes laws by decree and basically exercises personal rule whenever he cares to do so. ("What the King says is Law.")
A hereditary monarchy is one where the position of Monarch, which is usually held for life, is passed as a matter of law and custom to the oldest child of the dead monarch, or to the next closest relative if there is no living child. Thus the Monarchy, basically the ownership of the kingdom, is inherited just like any other piece of property, upon the death of the previous owner.
In some countries, only a son may inherit the Monarchy. This is called "primogeniture."
The United Kingdom has a modified form of primogeniture in which a daughter can inherit, but only when there is no living son to inherit.

It's not chosen. The Japanese monarchy is hereditary.
A monarch with limited powers is something separate from hereditary monarchy. A hereditary monarch is a system of governance where a person inherits the kingdom from someone in his family. A monarch with limited powers is a system of governance where the monarch can only do certain types of activities because others are prohibited by law. You can have a hereditary monarchy with unlimited powers, like Saudi Arabia. You can have a hereditary monarchy with limited powers, like Spain. You can have a non-hereditary monarchy with unlimited powers, like some previous African Kingdoms (the King was an appointed position). You can have a non-hereditary monarchy with limited powers, but this is only theoretical as there has never been such a monarchy in history.
